The family of Robert Card, the suspected perpetrator of Wednesday night’s double mass shooting in Maine, says they heard voices at the scene of the alleged attacks. Following the tragic events, Card’s family contacted Card to surrender to authorities.

Katie Card, who is married to Card’s brother, shared that Robert Card recently started wearing powerful hearing aids to combat hearing loss. He has since insisted to his family that he could hear people talking badly about him, including the attacks on the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley and Schemengees Bar and Grill on Wednesday night, where he allegedly killed 18 people.
“He believed he could actually hear people say things,” Katie Card said, explaining that this belief had only developed in the last few months.
The series of violent events started around 19:00. Another shooting was reported Wednesday at the Just-In-Time Recreation bowling alley in Lewiston, about four miles away at Schemengees Bar & Grille. 18 people, including children playing bowling, died and 13 people were injured.
At a press conference Thursday morning, officials refrained from discussing why Robert Card might have targeted those locations.
Katie Card also revealed that her brother-in-law would get upset when they tried to convince him that the voices were a figment of his imagination. His mental health had recently deteriorated, resulting in an extended stay in a facility over the summer.
As the tragic story unfolded, Card and her husband hoped Robert had no connection to the violence. However, when they learned where the shooting took place, her husband immediately ran home.
Katie Card, along with the rest of the family, are currently waiting for updates and reaching out to her brother-in-law in hopes he will read her messages.
