Jewish students at Cooper Union College in New York City. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators reportedly banged on the doors and windows of the school library, where Jewish students were barricaded for a significant period of time. The incident occurred amid tensions between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups on campus, following dueling rallies and demonstrations in the area.

Who is Mathieu Magloire?

Mathieu Magloire is understood to be a student who allegedly organized the mob attack on Jewish students at Cooper Union College. The claim was made by the Twitter account Antisemitism.

The clashes followed rival demonstrations between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli groups and coincided with tensions at neighboring New York University and Columbia University. Footage outside showed Jewish students under siege in the library, while demonstrators outside chanted slogans defending Palestine and condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The incident drew widespread condemnation from various Jewish leaders, city officials, and organizations such as the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee. Increasing concerns about the safety of Jewish students on campus have led to requests from relevant authorities to increase security measures.

Israel launched an offensive against Hamas after Hamas killed more than 1,400 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel on October 7. US President Joe Biden called this incident “the most devastating massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust.”

The NYPD assured that no property damage, criminal charges or injuries occurred during the incident, New York Jewish Week reported. However, Jewish students stated that they felt threatened, citing aggressive behavior towards people with Jewish identity. Pro-Palestinian demonstrators declared that their protests were against institutions, not individuals, and that they rejected antisemitism.

Although the incident did not cause any physical harm or property damage, it significantly increased anxiety and unrest in the affected community. The NYPD is reportedly investigating the incident and reviewing security footage to gain a comprehensive understanding of the events.
